A Web-based Defect Management/Tracking System Developed Non-Programmer
Jay Vogt works at Schlumberger, where his team deals with software for oil exploration. Part of his presentation introduced us to the software his team supports. He spent quite a bit of time trying to convince us that he is not a programmer.
He, then, proceeded to demonstrate a pretty respectable web interface that he had written to query the defect/feature tracking system he works with. The app supports querying, sorting, and filtering the data by a number of different criteria. The interface was also color-coded to make it easier to identify some information at a glance.
The result is a powerful and usable system. Jay's program provides an effective interface, queries the Oracle database, and displays the data in a format that is useful to several teams in his company. This is an effective system by most people's definition.
This talk did a great job of displaying real, functional software solving a real need.
We had 11 people attending this month. As always, we'd like to thank cPanel, Inc. for providing the meeting space and food for the group.
